LAKE MONTICELLO, Va.-The No. 1 Virginia rowing team swept six races Sunday (April 15) on the final day of the UVa Invitational on Lake Monticello. It was the squad’s final tune-up before competing in the ACC Championships on April 21 in Clemson, S.C.

“We had some good racing this weekend,” head coach Kevin Sauer said. “I want to thank all the visiting crews for coming, there was great sportmanship showed by all.”

“We are starting to see some progress in the key boat categories and the athletes are responding to challenging circumstances,” associate head coach Steve Pritzker added. “Our goal continues to be significant success with the end of season performances in mind.”

The Cavaliers defeated both No. 14 Cornell and No. 19 Minnesota in five races, including the first Varsity Eight, where UVa finished the 2,000-meter course comfortably in 6:29.5. The Big Red placed second in 6:42.2 and the Golden Gophers were third in 6:48.7.

In the second Varsity Eight, Virginia (6:47.4) held off Minnesota (6:50.3) and Cornell (6:51.1), who both pushed hard around the 1,000-meter mark, but the Cavaliers were able to pull away in the last 500 meters.

Virginia also picked up a close win in the first Varsity Four (7:26.4) over Cornell (7:29.7), while Minnesota was third (7:42.9), and the second Varsity Four (7:36.7) crossed the line 18 seconds ahead of the Big Red (7:54.8).

The Cavaliers’ third Varsity Four was also in action Sunday, victorious over San Diego and Penn’s second Varsity Four. UVa finished in 7:44.4 to USD’s 7:50.1 and the Quakers’ 7:57.5.

In the final race of the day for UVa, the Novice Eight (6:58.2) had its biggest challenge of the year and stepped up to defeat Cornell and Minnesota’s third Varsity Eights, who finished in 7:01.7 and 7:14.7, respectively.

The Cavaliers return to action Saturday (April 21) for the ACC Championships in Clemson, S.C. Virginia looks for its third consecutive conference championship and 12th title in the last 13 years.
