FAIRFAX, Va.-Freshman Nick Vena (Morristown, N.J.) broke the school record in the shot put as the throwers of the Virginia men’s and women’s track and field teams competed at the Patriot Open Invitational in Fairfax, Va., Saturday (April 14).

Vena finished first in the shot put with a mark of 19.27m (63′ 2.75″), which came on his last attempt. Vena’s first four throws all surpassed 18 meters. He also finished fifth in the discus with a mark of 46.00m (150′ 11″).

Senior Vincenzo Chiariello (Staten Island, N.Y.) won the men’s hammer throw in with a distance of 60.73m (199′ 3″). In the women’s javelin, sophomore Abbey Karin (Byfield, Mass.) finished second with a distance of 43.42m (142′ 5″), the sixth-fastest mark in program history.

In the women’s discus, senior Erin Wykoff (St. Jacob, Ill.) placed second with a throw of 47.59m (156′ 2″). She also placed fourth in the women’s hammer with a mark of 53.45m (175′ 4″), while senior Maureen Laffan (Toms River, N.J.) finished third at 54.23 (177′ 11″).

The Cavaliers return to action April 19-21 for the ACC Championships at newly renovated Lannigan Field in Charlottesville, Va.
