No. 25 Virginia Concludes Homestand at 6 p.m. Tuesday vs. Richmond

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – The No. 25 Virginia baseball team finishes its nine-game homestand at 6 p.m. Tuesday when it plays host to Richmond at Davenport Field. WINA 1070-AM will have the local radio broadcast of the game, while the radio feed also will be streamed online at VirginiaSports.com (subscription required).
The game marks another $2 Tuesday at Davenport Field, with $2 hot dogs and sodas available throughout the evening.
The scheduled Tuesday pitching matchup: Virginia junior RHP Joel Effertz (Ladysmith, Wis.) against Richmond sophomore RHP Andrew Blum.
Ranked No. 25 nationally this week in the USA Today/ESPN Coaches Poll, Virginia (23-13-1) endured a tough weekend against No. 8 North Carolina last week as the Tar Heels swept a three-game ACC series from the Cavaliers at Davenport Field. The top hitting squad in the ACC with a .306, UVa struggled at the plate, totaling six runs and 17 hits in the series.
Stephen Bruno (Jr., Audubon, N.J.) continued his hot hitting with a 5-for-12 weekend against UNC; he recorded two doubles, a homer and three RBI in the series. Bruno now has a nine-game hitting streak, one shy of his season high. Bruno is hitting 15-for-36 (.417) during his hitting streak.
Virginia’s pitching staff owns a 3.28 ERA, which stands fifth in the conference. UVa also has a .974 fielding percentage, which continues to top the ACC.
Richmond (18-15) won two of three games in its series with George Washington this past weekend in Richmond. Matt Zink leads the team with a .351 batting average. Chris Cowell currently tops the Atlantic 10 with 13 home runs, as UR ranks fourth nationally with 44 homers this year. As a team, the Spiders are hitting .291 and own a 5.37 ERA. UR also is fielding at a .962 clip.
UVa maintains a 78-58-2 edge in the all-time series with Richmond. The Cavaliers have captured nine straight games in the series, dating to 2003.
Virginia continues ACC play this weekend when it travels to Duke for a three-game series. The teams are slated to play at 6 p.m. Friday, 2 p.m. Saturday and 1 p.m. Sunday at Durham Bulls Athletic Park in downtown Durham, N.C.
