CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – The Tewaaraton Foundation has announced the 2012 Tewaaraton Award men’s nominees, presented by Panama Jack. UVa senior midfielder Colin Briggs and senior attackman Steele Stanwick are two of 25 nominees narrowed down from the massive preseason watch list.

From the 25 nominees will come five finalists, who will be honored at the 12th annul Tewaaraton Award event on May 31, 2012, at the Smithsonian Institution’s National Museum of the American Indian in Washington, D.C.

Stanwick (Baltimore, Md.), the 2011 Tewaaraton winner, leads the nation with 44 assists and ranks No. 3 nationally with 4.92 points per game. With seven points in his last game against North Carolina, Stanwick passed Dough Knight (249) for the UVa record for career points. The 2012 ACC Offensive Player of the Year now sits No. 27 all-time in NCAA Division I men’s college lacrosse history with 253 career points.

Briggs (Narragansett, R.I.) is No. 4 on the team with 18 goals and No. 2 on the squad in assists with 14. Briggs is an All-ACC performer for the second year in a row and has 12 ground balls on the season. Briggs is No. 14 all-time at UVa in career midfielder goals with 59.

UVa is one of five schools with multiple nominees. Johns Hopkins, Loyola, Princeton and UMass are the others.

Virginia concludes the regular season schedule on Friday in the Whitman’s Sampler Mile High Classic against Penn, to be contested inside Sports Authority Field at Mile High, in Denver, Colo. The game will be streamed live on ESPN3 and face off is set for 7:30 p.m. EST.
