20th Annual Shoot Out for Cancer Set for Sunday

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. -Student-athletes from the Virginia athletics department Student-Athlete Mentor Program (SAMs) will host the 20th annual Shoot Out for Cancer, a fundraiser for cancer research, on Sunday, April 29. The event will be held from 1-4 p.m. at the Carr’s Hill Field, located at the intersection of Emmet and Ivy Roads. Admission is $5 and additional donations will also be accepted.

All proceeds from the event will benefit the research on leukemia and bone marrow transplantation being conducted at UVa’s Cancer Center by Dr. Mary Laughlin and her team.

Virginia’s SAMs, a group established to address the unique concerns of student-athletes ranging from community involvement to drug and alcohol use and misuse awareness, will be joined in attendance by student-athletes from all available teams to help raise money and awareness for cancer research.

Kids can get autographs while playing games with Virginia student-athletes, playing on inflatables and running through a real obstacle course. Food will be provided by some of Charlottesville’s most popular restaurants. There will also be a silent auction of UVa and other sports memorabilia.

The Shoot Out for Cancer held its inaugural event in 1993 and was established by former men’s soccer player Tom Henske. Inspired by teammate Curt Onalfo, who was diagnosed with Hodgkin’s disease, Henske organized the first Shoot Out in hopes off raising awareness and money for pediatric cancer treatment and research.

In the event of inclement weather on Sunday, the event will be moved inside to Memorial Gymnasium.
