COLUMBUS, Ohio-The No. 2 Virginia rowing team picked up four wins against No. 3 Michigan in the morning and four more wins versus No. 4 Ohio State in the afternoon Saturday (April 28) in Columbus, Ohio.
In the morning session against the Wolverines, the first Varsity Eight picked up the win, 6:33.9-6:41.2, while in the first Varsity Four, UVa was victorious, 7:39.50-7:49.46.
“I thought the Varsity Eight had an exceptional race against previously unbeaten Michigan,” head coach Kevin Sauer said. “We were behind early in the race and made a pretty good move to bring us even and then we were able to keep moving for the win.”
“It was good to see the (first Varsity) Four show how it stacks up with two of the best teams in the country,” associate head coach Steve Pritzker said. “We look forward to continuing to improve over the next month.”
Virginia also picked up wins over Michigan in the Novice Eight (7:13.30-7:22.20) and the third Varsity Four (7:52.00-7:58.47).
Michigan crossed the line first in the second Varsity Eight (6:48.43-6:56.57) and the second Varsity Four (7:47.00-7:48.14).
In additional races in the morning session, UVa defeated Clemson in the first Novice Four, 8:49.19-9:00.12, and Ohio State in the fourth Varsity Four, 8:16.90-8:37.99.
Against the Buckeyes, the first Varsity Eight won with a time of 6:19.70, almost six seconds ahead of OSU (6:25.64), while the first Varsity Four picked up a tight win by just 0.21 (7:11.20-7:11.41).
“A very good Ohio State crew came in ready for us, but we rowed another good race to cap a excellent weekend,” Sauer said.
The Cavaliers also picked up wins in the Novice Eight (6:43.60-6:46.27) and fourth Varsity Four (7:53.81-7:58.39). In addition, Virginia defeated Clemson in the Novice Four, 8:16.40-8:32.99.
Ohio State crossed the line first in the second Varsity Eight (6:29.94-6:39.14), second Varsity Four (7:18.10-7:23.27) and third Varsity Four (7:19.70-7:31.03).
