Cavaliers Play George Mason Tuesday

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – The Virginia softball team (25-24) will play George Mason in a single game at 5 p.m. Tuesday at The Park. The matchup was originally scheduled as a doubleheader on April 18 but was postponed because of inclement weather. It marks the final home game of the season for the Cavaliers. Admission is free.

Virginia is coming off a 4-1 week after sweeping Liberty in a Wednesday doubleheader and finishing off Atlantic Coast Conference play with a series win at home over NC State, two games to one.

UVa sophomore Erica Cipolloni (Philadelphia, Pa.) leads the offense with a .298 average, 26 runs and six home runs on the year. Sister Giannina Cipolloni (Philadelphia, Pa.) contributes a .288 average with a team-best 44 hits, eight doubles and 29 steals. She is three stolen bases away from tying her own single season record of 32 steals set in 2011.

Junior pitcher Melanie Mitchell (White Plains, Md.) lowered her season ERA to 1.43 and picked up three more wins last week to improve to 18-12. Mitchell has 267 strikeouts on the year compared to just 25 walks.

George Mason is 12-38 this season and most recently picked up a conference series win at Drexel, two games to one, over the weekend.

Freshman Brooke Blakenship paces the Patriots with a .364 average, five home runs and 29 RBI. In the circle, six different pitchers have made appearances; senior Miranda Cranford leads the staff with a 2.83 ERA and sophomore Stephanie Maher has a 3.25 ERA in a team-high 107.2 innings pitched.

Virginia leads the all-time series with George Mason, 52-24. The two teams last met for a doubleheader during the 2009 campaign, a Cavalier sweep in Fairfax, Va.
