Stanwick Named a Finalist for the 2012 Tewaaraton Trophy

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – Reigning Tewaaraton Trophy winner and UVa senior attackman Steele Stanwick has been named one of five finalists for the 2012 Tewaaraton Trophy, the Tewaaraton Foundation announced Thursday. The heralded Tewaaraton Trophy is awarded annually to the top male collegiate lacrosse player. Stanwick and the four other finalists will be invited to Washington, D.C., for the 12th annual Tewaaraton Award ceremony, May 31 at the Smithsonian Institution’s National Museum of the American Indian.

“It is the ultimate recognition for these five men’s finalists to have been recognized by the game’s very best coaches,” said Jeffrey Harvey, chairman of the Tewaaraton Foundation. “They are all worthy of the sport’s ultimate award, and we could not be more excited to have this group come to Washington, D.C. on May 31.”

Stanwick (Baltimore, Md.) was named the 2012 ACC Offensive Player of the Year, leading the nation in assists (45) and ranking No. 2 in the country with 5.07 points per game. His 260 career points place him No. 22 all-time in the NCAA Division I record books.

The other finalists are Colgate’s Peter Paum, Duke’s C.J. Costabile, UMass’ Will Manny and Loyola’s Mike Sawyer.

UVa returns to action as the No. 5 seed in the upcoming NCAA Tournament. The Cavaliers host unseeded and regular season Ivy League champion Princeton. Faceoff is set for 1 p.m. on Sunday and the game will be televised on ESPN in HD.
