CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va.-Five members of the Virginia rowing team have been named to the Collegiate Rowing Coaches Association (CRCA) All-South Region team, senior Sarah Borchelt (Sterling, Mass.) and junior coxswain Molly Frear (Wilton, Conn.) have been tabbed CRCA National Scholar-Athletes and head coach Kevin Sauer has been selected as the South Region Coach of the Year, the association announced Tuesday (May 23).

Senior coxswain Sidney Thorsten (Atlanta, Ga.), senior Keziah Beall (Bainbridge, Island, Wash.), senior Martha Kuzzy (Minneapolis, Minn.), junior Kristine O’Brien (Massapequa Park, N.Y.) were named to the first-team All-Region squad, while senior Sarah Cowburn (Redditch, Worcester, England) was honored on the second team.

All five were selected to the All-ACC team and are members of the First Varsity Eight that won the 2012 ACC Championship in April and was named ACC Crew of the Year.

This is Thorsten’s third career All-Region selection, while Kuzzy and O’Brien second consecutive first-team nod.

Borchelt was the 2011 ACC Rowing Scholar-Athlete of the Year and is a national scholar-athlete for the second year in a row. Both Frear and Borchelt were part of the Second Varsity Eight that claimed gold at the 2012 conference regatta.

This is Sauer’s fourth CRCA South Region Coach of the Year honor. He was selected as the ACC Coach of the Year for the eighth time in April. Sauer led UVa to the 2010 NCAA title and seven boats have captured national championships during his tenure. He was named the 2010 National Coach of the Year.

The Cavaliers compete in the 2012 NCAA Championships Friday through Sunday (May 25-27) in Mercer Lake, N.J.
