UVa Golfers Altomare and Mao Qualify for U.S. Women's Open

Charlottesville, Va. – Virginia women’s golfers Brittany Altomare and Briana Mao have qualified for the 2012 U.S. Women’s Open. This year’s tournament will take place July 5-8 at Blackwolf Run in Kohler, Wisc.

Altomare, a junior from Shrewsbury, Mass., finished third at the sectional qualifier in Rockville, Md., at Woodmont Country Club. Mao, a freshman from Folsom, Calif., took medalist honors at the qualifier at Wayzata Country Club in Wayzata, Minn.

This will be Altomare’s third trip to the U.S. Women’s Open she played in the 2009 tournament at Saucon Valley Country Club and at the 2010 event at Oakmont Country Club. She has also played in the last two U.S. Amateur Championships.

A three-time collegiate All-American, Altomare helped UVa to its second consecutive fourth-place finish at the NCAA Championships in May, placing 29th overall. This season she led Virginia with a 73.61 stroke average. She topped UVa in scoring in eight of 11 tournaments and earned All-ACC honors for the third consecutive season.

Mao placed 38th at the NCAA Championships after being UVa’s top finisher at the ACC Championships. She was second on the team with a 74.96 stroke average. Her stroke average was the third best of any freshman in the ACC in 2012.
