Borchelt Named to Capital One Academic All-America First Team

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va.-Virginia rowing senior Sarah Borchelt (Sterling, Mass.) has been named to the Capital One Academic All-America Women’s At-Large First Team, the Collegiate Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA) announced Thursday (June 7).

Borchelt, a two-year co-captain, helped the Cavaliers to capture the 2012 NCAA Championship in May. She was a part of the Second Varsity Eight that finished fifth at the national regatta and won the ACC Championship in April.

She was named to the Capital One Academic All-District III Women’s At-Large First Team on May 18. The senior was named the 2011 ACC Rowing Scholar-Athlete of the Year and twice was named a Collegiate Rowing Coaches Association (CRCA) National Scholar-Athlete. She graduated in May with a degree in nursing with a 3.92 GPA.

Borchelt becomes Virginia’s 21st Academic All-America First Team selection and the Virginia rowing program’s first Academic All-American.

The women’s at-large program for Capital One Academic All-America includes the sports of bowling, fencing, field hockey, golf, gymnastics, ice hockey, lacrosse, rifle, rowing, skiing, swimming and diving, tennis and water polo. To be eligible for Academic All-America consideration, a student-athlete must be a varsity starter or key reserve, maintain a cumulative G.P.A. of 3.30 on a scale of 4.00, have reached sophomore athletic and academic standings at her current institution and be nominated by her sports information director.
