CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – Matt Snyder (R-Jr., Lewistown, Pa.) of the Virginia wrestling team has been tabbed on the 2012 Capital One Academic All-America Team, announced Thursday by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA). Snyder was named to the third team of CoSIDA’s men’s at-large team.
The men’s at-large category includes student-athletes from fencing, golf, gymnastics, ice hockey, lacrosse, rifle, skiing, swimming, tennis, volleyball, water polo and wrestling. Snyder was one of just six wrestlers to earn a spot on the All-America squad.
The 2012 ACC Champion at 125 pounds, Snyder finished the year with a 24-5 record, including a team-high eight falls. A kinesiology major with a 3.83 GPA, he also was named the ACC Wrestling Scholar-Athlete of the Year.
Snyder lived on the Lawn at UVa this year – one of the highest honors bestowed upon a Virginia student. He earned his bachelor’s degree in May and has plans to enter the medical field once his wrestling eligibility has ended.
After capturing the ACC championship, Snyder was the No. 11 national seed at 125 pounds at the NCAA Championships. He went 2-2 at NCAAs, with both losses coming in narrow decisions to fellow seeded wrestlers. Snyder boasts a 77-32 career record and has advanced to the NCAA championships each of the last two seasons.
