Kohler, Wisc. – Virginia women’s golfers Brittany Altomare and Briana Mao opened played Thursday at the 2012 U.S. Women’s Open at Blackwolf Run in Kohler, Wisc. Both players had single-hole setbacks that will likely prevent them from making the cut and advancing to the final 36 holes.Altomare shot 6-over 78 and is in 106th place. She opened her morning round by carding a quadruple bogey on the par-4 first hole. Over her final 17 holes she managed two birdies and four bogeys. Altomare hit 12 of 14 fairways and made 12 of 18 greens in regulation.

This is Altomare’s third trip to the U.S. Women’s Open. She played in the 2009 tournament at Saucon Valley Country Club and at the 2010 event at Oakmont Country Club.

Mao shot 13-over 85 and is in 153rd place. She played her front nine at 3-over 39 before a 5-over 10 on the 10th hole sidetracked her round.

A trio of players, Lizette Salas, Brittany Lincicome and Cristie Kerr, lead the field at 3-under 69.
