CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va.–First-year Virginia volleyball head coach Dennis Hohenshelt announced the Cavaliers’ 2012 schedule Thursday (June 21). The Cavaliers will host at least 15 matches, including two tournaments at Memorial Gymnasium.

“I’m very excited about the schedule we were able to put together and I think it will be challenging,” Hohenshelt said.

The 2012 slate features eight NCAA tournament teams from a year ago, including national semifinalist Florida State. The schedule also sees Virginia face five conference champions, including Colorado State (Mountain West), Delaware (CAA), FSU (ACC), Liberty (Big South) and Western Kentucky (Sun Belt). The Cavaliers return 10 letterwinners from last year’s squad.

Prior to the regular season, the Cavaliers will hold the annual Orange and Blue scrimmage at Memorial Gymnasium on Saturday, Aug. 18, at noon. Admission to this event is free.

UVa begins the regular season with a road trip to Fort Collins, Colo., Aug. 24-25 for the Colorado State Tournament against Rhode Island, Denver and the host Rams.

“We open up with some very tough matches at Colorado State, so it will be tough right from the get-go,” Hohenshelt said.

A weekend later, the Cavaliers will host a home tournament at Memorial Gymnasium on Aug. 31-Sept. 1, featuring Delaware, Lehigh and Western Kentucky.

Virginia travels east to Richmond, Va., for a tourney at VCU Sept. 7-8, where the Cavaliers will face the host Rams, Appalachian State and Georgetown, before hosting another tournament Sept. 14-15 with Liberty and ACC rival Virginia Tech. The match with the Hokies will mark the start of the conference schedule.

“We have two good home tournaments with quality opponents, NCAA tournament opponents like Delaware and Western Kentucky, so we’ll be put to the test in the preseason,” Hohenshelt said. “The point of that is to get solid, work the freshmen into the program a little bit and to win. I want to get off to a good start with our team and obviously that fourth weekend of the season is big because we’re hosting Virginia Tech in the ACC opener on Friday night.”

The final home weekend for the Cavaliers will be Nov. 9-10 against Maryland and Boston College, while UVa will finish the regular season with three road games, concluding with Virginia Tech on Nov. 23 in Blacksburg, Va.
