OMAHA, Neb. – Former Cavalier Matt McLean advanced to the championship final of the 200-meter freestyle and is seeded fourth in the event after day two of the United States Olympic Swimming Trials was held Tuesday at the CenturyLink Center in Omaha, Neb.
The event final of the 200-meter freestyle is slated for Wednesday night. Live coverage on NBC begins at 8 p.m. eastern. Virginia is represented by 46 swimmers – past, present and future – at Olympic Trials.
McLean and former teammate Scot Robison each made it out of 200-meter freestyle preliminaries and moved on to swim in the semifinals Tuesday night.
In the first heat of the semifinal, McLean turned in a time of 1:47.40 and touched the wall first. Ryan Lochte (1:46.25), Michael Phelps (1:46.27) and Conor Dwyer (1:47.38) are the top three seeds in front of McLean heading into the championship final. The top four swimmers in the 200-meter freestyle earn a berth onto the Olympic Team. Lochte (400-meter individual medley), Phelps (400-meter individual medley) and Dwyer (400-meter freestyle) have already earned spots on the team.
Robison finished in 1:48.40 and placed 11th in the semifinals; the top eight finishers advance.
Earlier in the day, rising sophomore Ellen Williamson posted a 19th-place finish in the 100-meter backstroke, three spots away from a return swim. The 2011 ACC Freshman of the year, Williamson finished in a time of 1:02.46. Incoming freshman Courtney Bartholomew also posted a top-25 finish; she placed 22nd overall in 1:02.67.
Rising junior Rachel Naurath led Virginia in the 400-meter freestyle. She clocked a mark of 4:13.18 to place 21st overall.
Day three of Olympic Trials continues Wednesday morning with preliminaries in the women’s 200-meter freestyle and 200-meter individual medley and the men’s 200-meter butterfly.
