Incoming Freshman Vascotto to Compete for U.S. at World Juniors

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va.–Virginia rowing incoming freshman Nina Vascotto will be representing the United States at the World Rowing Senior and Junior Championships in Plovdiv, Bulgaria from Aug. 15-19.
Vascotto qualified for Team USA by winning the junior women’s single sculls at the 2012 U.S. Junior World Championship Trials in July. The Hunnington, N.Y., native earned third place in the same event at the 2011 USRowing Youth National Championships.
The six heats for the junior women’s single sculls are to be contested Thursday (Aug. 16), starting at 4:20 a.m. Eastern time.
The World Senior and Junior Championships are held at the same regatta every four years when the Olympic Games are held. Senior events that were competed at the Olympics are not competed at the World Championships.
At last year’s World Junior Rowing Championships in Eton Dorney, England, rising sophomore Chandler Lally (Bryn Mawr, Pa.) won gold with the United States in the women’s four, while classmate Lizzy Youngling (Westport, Conn.) placed fourth with the U.S. in the women’s quadruple sculls. Rising junior Catherine Multari (Ontario, Canada) finished sixth with Canada’s four.
