Cherry Hills Village, Colo. – Virginia sophomore Denny McCarthy was eliminated during the first round of match play at the U.S. Amateur Championship taking place at Cherry Hills Country Club in Cherry Hills Village, Colo. McCarthy was one of 64 players who advanced to match play following 36 holes of stroke play. He had to participate in a 17-player tiebreaker earlier Wednesday to claim a place in the match play field.

McCarthy lost to California’s Brandon Hagy in 19 holes. After 16 holes of play McCarthy led 2-up but Hagy used an eagle on the par-5 17th hole to close within one. Hagy then shot par on No. 18 while McCarthy carded a bogey. Hagy took the match with a birdie on the 19th hole.

The 2012 U.S. Amateur Championship continues with the second and third rounds of match play Thursday. The quarterfinal and semifinal rounds will be played Friday and Saturday, respectively, and the championship concludes with a 36-hole final on Sunday, starting at 8:30 a.m. MDT.The U.S. Amateur is one of 13 national championships conducted annually by the United States Golf Association, 10 of which are strictly for amateurs.
