GREENSBORO, N.C.–Virginia volleyball senior captain Jessica O’Shoney has been named to the Atlantic Coast Conference Preseason All-ACC Volleyball team, the conference announced Friday (Aug. 17). In addition, the Cavaliers have been selected ninth in the preseason coaches’ poll.

A native of Austin, Texas, O’Shoney ranked fifth in the ACC in hitting percentage (.347) and seventh in blocks (1.09 blocks per set) in 2011. The middle blocker ranks 10th in UVa history with 321 career total blocks.

Virginia returns 10 letterwinners from the 2011 campaign and will host 15 matches at Memorial Gymnasium, including two tournaments. The Cavaliers’ home opener is against Western Kentucky on Friday, Aug. 31 at 7 p.m. All of Virginia’s Atlantic Coast Conference home matches will be played on Friday or Saturday nights at 7 p.m., including the conference opener against Virginia Tech on Friday, Sept. 14.

Florida State, the defending Atlantic Coast Conference champion from 2011, was predicted by the league’s 12 head coaches to win the ACC title again in 2012.

The Seminoles accumulated 118 of a possible 121 points, including nine first-place votes from the coaches. First-place votes were awarded 11 points, second place received 10 points, etc. Coaches were not allowed to include their own team in their predicted order of finish.

North Carolina picked up 111 points and the remaining three first-place votes. Clemson (97) and Duke (92) rounded out the top four teams. Miami’s 81 points put the Hurricanes in fifth, ahead of Georgia Tech (66), Virginia Tech (63) and NC State (56). Virginia (36), Maryland (34), Wake Forest (25), and Boston College (13) completed the predicted order.

The Cavaliers will hold their annual Orange-Blue scrimmage on Saturday, Aug. 18 at noon. Admission to this event is free. Fans will have the opportunity to meet the team after the scrimmage and season ticket holders will receive a complimentary lunch.
