CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – The Virginia men’s soccer team concluded exhibition play with a 3-0 victory over Liberty Saturday evening at Klöckner Stadium.
The Cavaliers start the regular season at 7:30 p.m. Friday when they battle Georgetown in the ACC/BIG EAST Challenge at the Maryland SoccerPlex in Germantown, Md.
“We had a lot of young people on the field, and it was a good effort,” UVa head coach George Gelnovatch said. “We still have a lot to work on, but I’m pleased with the result.”
Virginia controlled the run of play for the majority of the evening. UVa notched the game’s first goal in the 10th minute. After a Scott Thomsen (Fr., Brick, N.J.) corner kick was deflected in the box, Zach Carroll (Fr., Grand Blanc, Mich.) ripped a shot home from eight yards out.
UVa added a goal in the 48th minute. Cameron Chavira (Jr., Roanoke, Va.) was taken down deep in the box, prompting a penalty kick which Brian James (Fr., Sunrise, Fla.) buried for his second goal in the preseason.
The Cavaliers added a final tally in the 57th minute. After a Chris Somerville (So., West Chester, Pa.) header just inside midfield, Darius Madison (Fr., Philadelphia, Pa.) corralled the loose ball and broke down the middle of the field before beating goalkeeper Scott Sutarik for the score.
Virginia out-shot Liberty 20-5 and put eight shots on goal, compared to two for the Flames. Spencer LaCivita (So., Raleigh, N.C.) and Matt Miscione (R-So., Ashburn, Va.) each saw a half of action in goal for the Cavaliers.
