FORT COLLINS, Colo.—The Virginia volleyball team split a pair of matches the final day of the Rams Volleyball Rocky Mountain Invite, defeating Rhode Island, 3-0, before falling to Denver, 3-0, Saturday (Aug. 25) in Fort Collins, Colo.
The win over Rhode Island (0-2) was the first for the Cavaliers (1-2) under first-year head coach Dennis Hohenshelt.
In the first match of the day, the Cavaliers swept Rhode Island, 26-24, 25-10 and 25-19. UVa had seven more kills than the Rams (33-26) and 18 less errors (15-33).
Senior captain Jessica O’Shoney (Houston, Texas) led the Cavaliers with 14 kills and a .333 hitting percentage, while junior captain Emily Rottman (Santa Barbara, Calif.) led the squad with 16 digs.
UVa’s two setters, senior Rachel Gray (Shawnee, Kan.) and sophomore Tori Janowski (Sterling, Va.) each recorded double-doubles. Gray tallied 18 assists and 11 digs, while Janowski had 11 kills in addition to 10 assists.
In a first set with 10 ties and the score tied at 24, the Cavaliers used a Ram hitting error and a kill from O’Shoney to win the set, 26-24.
The Cavaliers scored the first seven points and took the second set 25-10, hitting .207 to Rhode Island’s -.207. UVa hit nine kills and the Rams had nine hitting errors.
The score was tied in the third, 16-16, before Virginia went on a 9-3 run to claim the set, 25-19.
Rhode Island was led by Britta Baarstad, who recorded 11 kills and 10 digs.
In the night cap, Virginia fell to Denver, 25-16, 25-22 and 25-15, as the Pioneers hit .440 to UVa’s .212. Colleen King led the Pioneers (2-1) with 14 kills and no errors.
Janowski recorded another double-double, leading the team with 11 kills, while adding 14 assists.
After the Cavaliers cut the Pioneer lead to 14-13 in the first set, Denver pulled off an 11-3 run to win 25-16.
In the second set, the two teams were never further than three points away, but the Cavaliers were never able to lead as Denver won the frame, 25-22.
In the third, Denver hit .500 with 18 kills and won the set, 25-15.
Janowski was named to the All-Tournament Team.
Next up, the Cavaliers host Delaware, Lehigh and Western Kentucky in the Holiday Inn Jefferson Cup on Aug. 31-Sept. 1.
