BOSTON – Former UVa All-American Ben Rubeor and three other former Cavaliers helped lead the Chesapeake Bayhawks to the 2012 Major League Lacrosse (MLL) title, defeating the Denver Outlaws 16-6, claiming the Steinfeld Trophy. Rubeor was named MVP of MLL’s Championship Games with eight goals over two games, including six scores against Boston in the semifinals, a 16-10 win for the Bayhawks.

Former UVa All-Americans Kyle Dixon (2003-06), Danny Glading (2006-09) and Kip Turner (2004-07) also were part of Chesapeake’s record fourth MLL championship. Bray Malphrus (2008-11) started the season with the Bayhawks, but enlisted in the Army after appearing in the first four games of the season.

“I thought I played well,” said Rubeor after being named MVP. “I had a pretty good game on Saturday and a good game on Sunday, but I thought we were all playing well. Boston’s a hard team to beat. It was definitely not something I was expecting.”

Rubeor went into the weekend with 16 regular season goals and scored half of those in two postseason games alone. His third quarter performance in Saturday’s semifinal game, in which he scored four goals to close out the quarter, might have been just what the Bayhawks needed to get their momentum going for the 16-10 win over the Cannons.

Dixon had three goals, two of which were for two points, and an assist in the semifinal win over Boston. Glading had two goals and an assist in the championship win over Denver, while Turner made 12 saves against the Outlaws.

Chris Bocklet, a 2012 UVa graduate, was named player of the game after scoring a game-high six goals in Denver’s semifinal win over Long Island, helping the Outlaws overcome a 12-5 deficit in the third quarter. Denver came back to win, 13-12.
