Charlottesville, Va. – The Virginia women’s golf team opens its season Sunday at the Cougar Classic in Charleston, S.C. at Yeaman Hall Club. The three-day, 54-hole event includes 10 teams in the 15-school field that competed in the 2012 NCAA Championships including the top five finishers.

The tourney field includes: Alabama, Auburn, College of Charleston, Charleston Southern, Duke, Florida, Furman, Georgia, LSU, Maryland, Miami, Mississippi, North Carolina, NC State, Penn State, South Carolina, Tennessee, UCF, UNC Greensboro, Wake Forest, USC, Vanderbilt, Virginia and Wisconsin.

The Cavalier lineup includes senior Brittany Altomare, juniors Portland Rosen and Elizabeth Brightwell, and sophomores Briana Mao and Melissa Edmonson. Altomare was a second-team All-American last season while Rosen earned honorable mention All-America honors.

Altomare, Rosen, Brightwell and Mao were all in the UVa lineup at the NCAA Championships that placed fourth overall.

Virginia enters the event ranked No. 12 in the Golf World preseason coaches’ poll.
