NEW ORLEANS—The Virginia men’s cross country team moved up three spots, while the women’s squad is ranked No. 1 in the latest U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association regional rankings, the organization announced Monday (Sept. 10).

The Cavalier men, who were ranked No. 8 in the preseason poll, are ranked No. 5 in this week’s Southeast Region rankings, while the women held steady at No. 1. This week’s poll is the first to be released after the fall season began two weeks ago.

In addition, the women have moved up three spots in this week’s national poll to No. 15 with 178 points, while the men received 11 points.

Virginia opened the season at the Virginia Tech Alumni Invitational on Aug. 31 in Blacksburg, Va. The women ran as a pack, finishing 10th through 14th, while sophomore Ed Schrom (Harrisburg, Pa.) led the men, finishing second. Many of the men’s top runners, including All-American graduate student Mark Amirault (Walpole, Mass.) did not compete.

Next up, the Cavaliers host the Virginia/Panorama Farms Invitational on Sept. 22, which will see teams from Oklahoma, California, Wisconsin and Kentucky in action on the women’s side and squads from Oklahoma, Syracuse, Michigan, Arkansas and Kentucky running on the men’s side.
