WASHINGTON, D.C. – President Obama and First Lady Michelle Obama honored the 2012 U.S. Olympic and Paralympic Teams at the White House at a ceremony on the South Lawn on Friday, Sept. 14.

Three current Virginia student athletes and one recent alum were among the athletes attending the ceremony. Senior swimmer Lauren Perdue (Greenville, N.C.) earned a gold medal with the United States in the women’s 4×200-meter freestyle relay at the 2012 Olympic Games. Perdue led off the American prelim relay to earn the medal. Former Cavalier swimmer Matt McLean (Class of 2011) won a gold medal with the United States in the men’s 4×200-meter freestyle relay. McLean also swam in the prelim of the relay to earn his medal.

Seniors Paige Selenski (Shavertown, Pa.) and Michelle Vittese (Cherry Hill, N.J.) competed for Team USA in field hockey. Both players saw significant playing time in Team USA’s six Olympic field hockey matches. Selenski scored a goal in the squad’s 2-1 loss to Belgium.
