CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va.—The Virginia volleyball team fell in its 2012 ACC opener to Virginia Tech, 25-23, 25-15, 25-17, on Friday (Sept. 14) before a capacity crowd of 744 at Memorial Gymnasium. It was the first match of the Marriott Cavalier Classic.

The Cavaliers (4-6, 0-1 ACC) were led by senior Rachel Gray (Shawnee, Kansas) who had a double-double with 17 assists and 12 digs, while sophomore Tori Janowski (Sterling, Va.) tallied 10 kills and eight assists.

VT (7-3, 1-0) hit .371 for the match and 10 blocks compared to Virginia’s .108 and two blocks.

In the first set, the Hokies led 21-16, but after a timeout, the Cavaliers went on a 6-1 run to force a VT timeout. Virginia Tech earned three kills out of the next four points to win the set, 25-23.

The Hokies won the second set, 25-15, after hitting .323 and limiting the Cavaliers to a .000 hitting percentage with eight errors.

In the third, Virginia Tech hit .414 with 14 kills to win the frame, 25-17.

Jordan Fish had 34 assists and eight digs and Kathryn Caine hit .579 with 11 kills and no errors to lead the Hokies.

The Marriott Cavalier Classic continues tomorrow when Liberty faces Virginia Tech at 1 p.m., while the Cavaliers will play the Flames at 7 p.m.
