TRAKAI, Lithuania-Day two of the 2012 World Under-23 Rowing Championships in Trakai, Lithania, concluded Thursday (July 12) with four current and former members of the Virginia rowing program in action.

Three Cavaliers, including graduated senior Cara Linnenkohl, rising junior Carli Goldberg and incoming freshman Holly Nixon, all advanced to the semifinals from the women’s double sculls heats.

Goldberg and Linnenkohl, representing the United States, placed third in the first heat in a time of 7:32.80. The Americans were in fourth throughout the first 1,000 meters before passing Germany to gain the automatic spot in the semifinals. Belarus and host Lithuania also advanced.

Nixon and her Irish teammate Laura D’Urso also crossed the line in the important third position in heat three (7:31.90). Austria and France finished in the top two spots to also move on to the semifinals, which will take place on Saturday (July 14).

Graduated senior Martha Kuzzy was a member of the American women’s quadruple sculls that placed fourth in a time of 6:37.23. They will compete in the petite final on Saturday. Australia, who won the heat, and Italy advanced to the grand final.

The regatta continues Friday through Sunday. Rising senior Kristine O’Brien will be in action Friday with the women’s eight for Team USA.
