GREENSBORO, N.C.—Graduate students Zach Gates and Catherine White have been named the Atlantic Coast Conference Men’s and Women’s Cross Country Performers of the Week, respectively, the conference announced Tuesday (Sept. 25).

Gates, running in his first race for Virginia since transferring from William and Mary, finished fourth overall, leading the Cavaliers to a third-place finish in Saturday’s Virginia/Panorama Farms Invitational. The Fishers, Ind., native ran the 8K course in 24:21.5 and helped Virginia finish just five points behind then-No. 22 Arkansas and nine points ahead of then-No. 21 Michigan. Virginia moved into the national rankings for the first time this season Tuesday, debuting at No. 27.

White, competing in her first cross country meet since 2009 due to injury, placed second overall individually, leading the Cavalier women to a third-place finish in the Virginia/Panorama Farms Invitational. The Roanoke, Va., native finished the 5K race in 17:34.7 and paced a quartet of Virginia runners that finished in the Top 20 individually.

The Cavaliers return to action Oct. 12 when they travel to Madison, Wis., for the Wisconsin adidas Invitational.
