CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – The Orange team evened its series with the Blue at a game apiece with an 8-1 win Tuesday afternoon in the second game of the Orange and Blue World Series at Davenport Field.

The second 2-game series in the 5-game slate is set for 6 p.m. Friday. There will be two 2-game series (Games 1-2 and Games 3-4 are separate series) as well as a Game 5. If a given team wins both games of either series, the other series automatically becomes a series that is based on run differential, provided it’s a split series, to allow the trailing team to still win a series. Each team is encouraged to score as many runs as possible and not worry about running the score up.

Jared King (R-Sr., Radford, Va.) recorded three hits for the Orange, while Brandon Downes (So., South Plainfield, N.J.) cranked a two-run homer as part of a two-hit day. Kenny Towns (So., Burke, Va.) had two hits for the Blue.

Freshman Brandon Waddell (Houston, Texas) started and worked four innings of one-run baseball to earn the win for the Orange. The team’s four freshman pitchers scattered five hits while holding the Blue offense to a single run.

Scott Silverstein (R-Sr., Olney, Md.) started for the Blue and took the loss after allowing five runs and nine hits in four innings.

The Orange started fast with three runs in the first inning on Downes’ two-run blast to left and a Mike Papi (So., Tunkhannock, Pa.) RBI single.

The Orange added a pair of runs in the third inning, but the Blue scored its lone run in the top of the fourth when Thomas Woodruff (So., Clifton, Va.) drew a bases-loaded walk to force in a run.

The Orange pushed its lead to 7-1 in the sixth on a Branden Cogswell (So., Ballston Lake, N.Y.) RBI squeeze bunt, followed by a Nick Howard (So., Olney, Md.) RBI single. They added their final run in the seventh on a Robert Bennie (Fr., Lake Worth, Fla.) single to plate King.
