Orange Sweeps Second Series, Forces Deciding Game 5

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – The Orange team swept the second two-game series in the Virginia baseball team’s annual Orange & Blue World Series, winning Game 3, 8-1, and Game 4, 6-3.

The teams will play a deciding Game 5 at 6 p.m. Tuesday (Oct. 16). By rule, after the Orange’s sweep in the second series, the first series (in which each team won one game) was determined by run differential in the two games. The Blue outscored the Orange by one run in the first series and thus was credited with the series win.

Game 3 Recap
The Orange team exploded for a seven-run fifth inning to break a 1-1 tie en route to an 8-1 win over the Blue. Mike Papi (So., Tunkhannock, Pa.), Joe McCarthy (Fr., Scranton, Pa.) and George Ragsdale (Fr., North Port, Fla.) each had a pair of RBI for the Orange.

The Orange got on the board in the fourth inning on a McCarthy run-scoring single, only to see the Blue come right back in the fifth with an unearned run off an Orange error.

The Blue then sent 11 to the plate in the fifth inning. The first seven batters reached base safely – four against reliever Sean Rutherford (So., Earlysville, Va.). Papi and Robert Bennie (Fr., Stroudsburg, Pa.) hit back-to-back singles, and Ragsdale followed with a two-run triple. Branden Cogswell (So., Ballston Lake, N.Y.) singled in Ragsdale, prompting a pitching change. David Rosenberger (Fr., Bethlehem, Pa.) gave up a single to Nick Howard (So., Olney, Md.), then hit Brandon Downes (So., South Plainfield, N.J.) with a pitch to load the bases.

McCarthy walked to force in a run, and Jared King (R-Sr., Radford, Va.) hit a sacrifice fly before Papi knocked in the final two runs.

Kyle Crockett (Jr., Poquoson, Va.) started for the Orange and allowed one unearned run in five innings to earn the win. Rutherford took the loss; Josh Sborz (Fr., McLean, Va.) started for the Blue and gave up one run over four innings.

Game 4 Recap
The Orange rallied from an early deficit to claim Game 4, 6-3. King had a huge day at the plate, going 4-for-4 with a pair of triples and four RBI. Cogswell scored three runs for the Orange.

Colin Harrington (R-Jr., Johnstown, Pa.) picked up a pair of hits for the Blue.

After the Orange scored in the first inning on a King RBI single to plate Cogswell, the Blue bounced back with a pair of runs in its half of the first. The Blue loaded the bases with none out on back-to-back singles by Harrington and Reed Gragnani (Sr., Richmond, Va.), followed by a Kenny Towns (So., Burke, Va.) hit by pitch. Derek Fisher (So., Rexmont, Pa.) walked to force in a run, and Nate Irving (So., Yonkers, N.Y.) hit into a double play to knock in Gragnani.

The Orange knotted the score in the third inning on King’s triple to right-center to bring home Cogswell.

The Blue moved ahead in the fourth on a Rob Amaro (R-Jr., Bensalem, Pa.) single to score Irving, but the Orange came back in the next half inning, tying the game on a Scott Silverstein (R-Sr., Olney, Md.) wild pitch to score Cogswell and taking the lead on a King single to left to bring in Downes.

The Orange added some cushion in the seventh inning on King’s second RBI triple of the day as well as a Papi run-scoring single.

Brandon Waddell (Fr., Houston, Texas) earned the win for the Orange after starting and going 3 2/3 innings while allowing three runs and three hits. Cameron Tekker (Fr., Waxhaw, N.C.) tossed 3 1/3 scoreless innings to hold the Blue in check.

Silverstein took the loss after allowing four runs (three) earned in 3 2/3 innings out of the bullpen. Blue starter Nathan Kirby (Fr., Midlothian, Va.) gave up a pair of runs over 3 1/3 innings.
