HARRISONBURG, Va.—The Virginia volleyball team won the first two sets, but dropped the next two sets before defeating James Madison, 25-22, 25-17, 21-25, 24-26, 15-11, Tuesday evening (Oct. 16) at Sinclair Gymnasium.
With the win, UVa snapped an eight-match losing streak and moved to 6-14, while JMU fell to 10-11 on the season.
“Its always good to get a win,” head coach Dennis Hohenshelt said. “I’m not happy with our performance because we had chances to put them away in the fourth, but we’ll go back to work for the next two days and get ready for Duke.”
In the fifth set, senior Jessica O’Shoney (Austin, Texas) tallied three blocks and two kills, while freshman Natalie Bausback (Carlsbad, Calif.) recorded four kills as the Cavaliers never trailed, 15-11.
Freshman Kayla Sears (Moorpark, Calif.) led UVa, hitting a season-high 21 kills, while junior Emily Rottman (Santa Barbara, Calif.) had 26 digs and sophomore Morgan Blair (Long Valley, N.J.) earned 10 blocks to lead the squad.
The first set was tied at 18 apiece, when UVa went on a 5-1 run to lead, 23-19. After a JMU kill and block, Sears hit a kill to earn a set point at 24-21. JMU fought off the first one, but Sears earned another kill to win the set, 25-22.
In the second set, the score was knotted at 11 when UVa scored five consecutive points and 14 out of 20 points to win, 25-17.
JMU hit .341 in the third, while UVa had eight hitting errors and four service errors in a 25-21 James Madison win.
In the fourth, JMU led 13-10, but the Cavaliers pulled off six points in a row to lead, 16-13. The Dukes came back with six out of seven points to claim a 19-17 advantage. After the score was tied at four times in a row, 20-23, Sears hit a kill to give UVa a match point, but JMU came back with a kill of its own followed by two blocks to win, 26-24.
Up next, the Cavaliers host Duke on Friday (Oct. 19) and Wake Forest on Saturday (Oct. 20). Both matches are set for a 7 p.m. start at Memorial Gymnasium.
