Duke Defeats Virginia in Four-Sets, 3-1

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va.—The Virginia volleyball dropped a four-set decision to Duke, 25-19, 24-26, 27-25, 25-15, Friday night (Oct. 19) at Memorial Gymnasium.
Virginia (6-15, 0-10 Atlantic Coast Conference) hit only .167 for the match, while Duke (12-10, 3-7 ACC) hit .253.
Freshman Natalie Bausback (Carlsbad, Calif.) led the Cavaliers with a season-high 20 kills, while classmate Kayla Sears (Moorpark, Calif.) and senior Jessica O’Shoney (Austin, Texas) added 12 kills each.
Sophomore Tori Janowski (Sterling, Va.) led the squad with 42 assists, while junior Emily Rottman (Santa Barbara, Calif.) recorded a game-high 24 digs.
In the first set, UVa had an early 8-5 lead, but Duke used a 6-0 run to gain the lead and never looked back, 25-19.
The second set featured 16 ties and 10 lead changes, as the Cavaliers claimed the frame, 26-24. Bausback had seven kills with no errors, including the last two points.
The third set was just as close with the score being tied at 22-25 before Duke prevailed, 27-25, on a UVa hitting error and a Blue Devil block.
In the fourth set, the Blue Devils hit .333, while UVa hit only .070 in a 25-15 Duke win.
Megan Hendrickson hit .333 with 13 kills and one error to lead Duke.
Up next, the Cavaliers face Wake Forest Saturday at Memorial Gymnasium at 7 p.m. Fans attending the UVa football game vs. Wake Forest can bring their ticket stubs to receive free admittance (subject to availability). Tomorrow night’s match is UVa’s Dig Pink game, where the first 100 fans in attendance will receive Virginia Dig Pink t-shirts.
