CHARLOTTESVILLE – The main draw of singles and doubles of the ITA Atlantic Regional got underway on Friday at the Snyder Tennis Center with the round of 128 of singles and the round of 64 of doubles.

Only one Cavalier was in singles action on Friday, with first-year Jonathan Cornish (London. England) suffering a 6-3, 6-1 loss to Wesley Barrett of Old Dominion. Six Virginia players are among the top 16 seeds and will start play Saturday after receiving a first round bye.

Jarmere Jenkins (College Park. Ga.) is the top seed in the draw, Justin Shane (Falls Church, Va.) is the No. 3 seed, Ryan Shane (Falls Church, Va.) is the No. 6 seed, Harrison Richmond (Pawleys Island, S.C.) is the No. 7 seed, Mitchell Polnet (Churchville, Pa.) is the No. 14 seed, and Julen Uriguen (Guatemala City, Guatemala) is the No. 16 seed.

In the opening round of doubles, two Virginia teams were in action and both won their first round match. Cornish and Ryan Shane posted an 8-1 win over the Bucknell duo of Evan Zimmer and Josh Kattan. Polnet teamed with Alex Scheinman (Los Angeles, Calif.) to top Jeff Kessler and Pierre Brondeau of Saint Joseph’s 8-6.

They join two Cavalier teams that had first round byes, top-seeded Alex Domijan (Wesley Chapel, Fla.) and Richmond, and the second-seeded duo of Justin Shane and Julen Uriguen.

Play continues on Saturday with two rounds of singles and one round of doubles. Action starts at 9 a.m. and admission is free.
