Cavaliers Come From Behind to Defeat Georgia Tech, 3-2

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va.—After falling behind two sets to one to Georgia Tech, the Virginia volleyball team came back to win, 26-28, 25-21, 22-25, 25-21, 15-11, Friday night (Nov. 2) at Memorial Gymnasium.
Virginia (8-17, 2-12 ACC) had its best day of the year offensively, hitting .390 with 70 kills and only 13 errors. Georgia Tech (16-9, 7-7 ACC) hit .289. It was the Cavaliers’ first win over the Yellow Jackets since Sept. 28, 2007 in Atlanta.
“We’re playing as more of a cohesive unit,” head coach Dennis Hohenshelt said. “We’ve continued to work hard and had a good week of practice. We’ve played well for a while now, but not for long stretches at a time. Tonight we did that and it was a good win for us.”
Freshman Kayla Sears (Moorpark, Calif.) led the Cavaliers with 20 kills, while senior Jessica O’Shoney (Austin, Texas) had 19 and freshman Natalie Bausback (Carlsbad, Calif.) added 16. Sophomore Tori Janowski (Sterling, Va.) recorded a double-double with 57 assists and 13 digs.
“Because Kayla (Sears) and Natalie (Bausback) have come along for us, we’ve been able to do more things offensively with Jess (O’Shoney) and that’s really helped us,” Hohenshelt said.
With 16 digs, junior Emily Rottman (Santa Barbara, Calif.) moved into 10th place on the all-time digs list at UVa with 1,121.
In the first set, the Cavaliers had two set points and fought off another before Georgia Tech won, 28-26. Both teams hit well, as UVa had a .444 hitting percentage and the Yellow Jackets hit .366.
The Cavaliers hit .600 in the second set on the way to a 25-21 win. Bausback had six kills, while O’Shoney and Sears each had five in the frame.
In the third, UVa cut the Georgia Tech lead to one at 12-11, but that was as close as they would come as the Yellow Jackets won, 25-22.
The Cavaliers held Georgia Tech to a .107 hitting percentage in the fourth and went on to win, 25-21.
In the fifth with the score tied at eight apiece, a UVa block by O’Shoney and sophomore Morgan Blair (Long Valley, N.J.) sparked a 7-3 run to win 15-8. Janowski had kills on each of the last two points on over-passes to clinch the victory.
Monique Mead led Georgia Tech with 22 kills.
Up next, the Cavaliers face Clemson Saturday (Nov. 3) at Memorial Gymnasium at 7 p.m.
