CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va.—The men’s and women’s Virginia swimming and diving programs earned a sweep over South Carolina Saturday (Nov. 3) at the Aquatic and Fitness Center. The No. 14 women (3-0) defeated the Gamecocks, 161-124, while the men (3-0) were victorious, 160-126.

The Cavalier men posted the fastest times in all 14 swimming events, while the women had a total of 13 victories in the meet.

“We have a really good first-year class this year after losing a lot of big names with our fourth-years last year, including David Karasek and Peter Geissinger,” senior Tom Barrett said. “Fortunately, we’ve had first-years come in and step up to the challenge. They’ve been pushing us in training and we’ve come together a lot more as a team.”

“We really go at it in practice and that’s what makes our team who we are,” junior Rachel Naurath said. “Our coaches are always encouraging us to race and treat each swim like the score is 0-0. We try not to focus on the score, but on each race.”

Both Barrett and Naurath picked up two individual victories, in addition to senior Lauren Perdue, who finished first in the women’s 50 free (22.82) and the 200 free (1:46.66) and classmate Brady Fox, who swept the 100 back (49.44) and 200 back (1:46.31). Barrett claimed the men’s sprint free events (50 free – 20.69 and 100 free – 45.25), while Naurath touched first in the women’s 1000 free in 9:46.90 and the 400 IM in 4:19.82.

On the women’s side, junior Shaun Casey set a season-best in the 200 fly, posting a time of 2:00.06, while sophomore Ellen Williamson had a season-best in the 200 back, winning in 2:01.07.

Other UVa women notching top times were junior Emily Lloyd (100 free – 50.72), sophomores Emily Dicus (100 fly – 55.55) and Kelly Offutt (500 free – 4:51.94) and freshmen Courtney Bartholomew (100 back – 54.28) and Becca Corbett (1m diving – 275.17).

The juniors on the men’s side notched top times along with season-best marks, including Parker Camp in the 200 free (1:38.71), Jan Daniec in the 1000 free (9:08.85) and Taylor Grey in the 200 breast (2:00.75).

Other Cavalier men touching first were senior Matt Murray (100 fly – 49.81), junior Brad Phillips (500 free – 4:27.27), sophomore David Ingraham (200 fly – 1:49.59) and freshmen Yannick Kaeser (100 breast – 56.40) and Chris Webb (400 IM – 3:55.00).

Up next, the Cavaliers face Big Ten opponents Indiana and Penn State on Nov. 16-17 in Bloomington, Ind.
