Virginia Competes in NCAA Southeast Regional Friday

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va.—The Virginia men’s and women’s cross country teams travel to Charlotte, N.C., Friday (Nov. 9) for the NCAA Southeast Regional at McAlpine Creek Park. The women’s 6K, which features 41 schools, will begin at noon, while the 40-team men’s 10K is slated for 1:15 p.m. Admission to the competition is free.

The Cavalier women are two-time defending champions in the Southeast Regional and have won three times in the last four years. The men placed ninth a year ago, with their highest finish being second in 2005 and 2008.

Last year, graduate student Mark Amirault (Walpole, Mass.) finished third on the men’s side to earn All-Southeast Region honors. Fellow grad student Catherine White (Roanoke, Va.) will compete in the meet for the first time since 2009, when she picked up the individual title.

The Cavalier men finished second at the Atlantic Coast Conference Championships on Oct. 27 in Blacksburg, Va. Graduate student Zach Gates (Fishers, Ind.), junior Thomas Porter (Fredericksburg, Va.) and redshirt freshman Kyle King (Yorktown, Va.) earned All-ACC honors, while true freshman Connor Rog (Fairfield, Conn.) was named the ACC Freshman of the Year.

Virginia’s women placed sixth at the conference meet, with White earning all-conference honors with a second-place finish.

The top-two teams and top-four individuals at each of the nine regional meets will automatically advance to the NCAA Championships to be held in Louisville, Ky., on Saturday, Nov. 17. Thirteen teams will also earn at-large bids, to be announced on Saturday, Nov. 10.
