Virginia Travels to Indiana to face Hoosiers, Penn State

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va.—The Virginia men’s and women’s swimming and diving teams travel to Bloomington, Ind., this weekend for a tri-meet against Big Ten schools Indiana and Penn State at the Counsilman-Billingsley Aquatic Center Friday and Saturday.
The two-day tri-meet kicks off on Friday at 5 p.m. ET as the teams will contest the 200 free relay, 200 individual medley, 500 free, 100 breast, 200 back, 100 free, 200 fly and 400 medley relay. The divers will compete on the women’s 1m and the men’s 3m springboards.
The second day of competition begins at 11 a.m. ET with the 200 medley relay, 1000 free, 50 free, 100 back, 200 breast, 100 fly, 200 free, 400 IM, 400 free relay, women’s 3m and men’s 1m diving.
In the latest CSCAA national rankings, the Cavalier men (3-0) are tabbed No. 8, while the women (3-0) are ranked 10th. Indiana’s men are No. 7 and 2-2 on the year, while the Hoosier women are ranked No. 14 and are 2-2 on the season. Penn State’s men (2-0) are No. 24 and the women (2-0) received votes in the poll.
Last time out, the Cavaliers earned a sweep over South Carolina Saturday (Nov. 3) at the Aquatic and Fitness Center in Charlottesville. The No. 14 women defeated the Gamecocks, 161-124, while the men were victorious, 160-126.
Senior Lauren Perdue was named the Atlantic Coast Conference Female Swimmer of the Week the last time UVa competed, claiming four first-place finishes and posting two NCAA B qualifying times to lead the Cavaliers to a dual meet victory over South Carolina.
Perdue has the top time in the country in the 50 free (22.59), the No. 6 100 free (49.67) and the seventh-ranked 200 free (1:46.66), while junior Rachel Naurath has the No. 7 200 fly (1:58.30), the eighth-ranked 1000 free (9:46.90).
Freshman Courtney Bartholomew has the No. 6 in the 100 back (53.91) and the ninth-fastest 200 back (1:57.06).
On the men’s side, senior Brady Fox has posted the ninth-fastest time in the country in the 200 back (1:46.31). Junior Brad Phillips has the 10th-fastest 1000 free (9:07.98), while classmate Jan Daniec is right behind with a time of 9:08.85.
Last year, the UVa women were victorious over both Big Ten foes, earning a 196-156 win over Penn State and a 212-140 victory against Indiana. The men defeated the Nittany Lions, 186-167, but fell to the Hoosiers, 217-136.
The Cavaliers travel to Athens, Ga., Nov. 30-Dec. 2 for their final meet of 2012, the Georgia Fall Invite, which is slated to feature squads from California, Georgia and Auburn.
