BLACKSBURG, Va. – The Virginia volleyball team wrapped up its 2012 season with a 28-26, 25-14, 25-17 loss at Virginia Tech Friday night in front of 1,123 spectators at Cassell Coliseum. Senior Jessica O’Shoney (Austin, Texas) had eight kills for Virginia, which concludes its first season under head coach Dennis Hohenshelt with a 9-22 record (3-17 ACC).

Virginia was limited to a .059 hitting percentage in the match, while Virginia Tech (16-14, 9-11) hit .208. Emily Rottman (Santa Barbara, Calif.) registered a team-high dozen digs for the Cavaliers.

The first game went down to the wire and featured six ties as well as a pair of lead changes. UVa trailed 23-18 before rattling off five straight points to tie the game. The teams went point-for-point and were tied at 26 before consecutive kills from Cara Baarendse and Jordan Fish finished off the Game 1 win for the Hokies.

The Cavaliers jumped out to a 4-2 lead in the second set before the Hokies rebounded with the next five points to take a lead they would not relinquish. UVa fell behind 16-5 in the third set before battling back with five straight points to force a Virginia Tech timeout. The Cavaliers then cut the lead to 16-11 on Vivian Burcescu kill out of the timeout, but UVa got no closer.

Virginia Tech was led by Samantha Gostling with nine kills and Jennifer Wiker with eight kills.
