West Virginia Head Coach Mike Carey

Opening statement:
First of all, I think both teams played extremely hard. It was a game of runs. We got hot there for a little bit in the second half and then Virginia did a nice job getting back into the game. Then, we hit a big three to push it back up to six. Virginia has a good basketball team. We have not been playing well, but in the second half we came in and played a lot better than we have the past two games.

On West Virginia’s defense:
If you saw our last two games, you wouldn’t say we were a defense. Our girls really stepped it up today and talked, communicated and did a great job. Both teams played extremely hard, there were a lot of bodies on the floor there. They let you play, and I just thought it was a great basketball game. Shooting percentages were ugly, we shot 35% and they shot 25%, but that’s the type of game it was. We feel very fortunate, they are going to win a lot of games and hopefully we will too.

On the second half run:
It was very big. We kind of challenged them at halftime. Even though we were playing hard, we weren’t playing smart. In the second half we played a lot smarter. We came out and got a run and caught them standing around a little bit.

On defending Ataira Franklin:
We knew they’ve got great players. Their posts are tough and physical inside. We rotated our guards in there on them, and I thought our guards battled for 40 minutes.
