CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – Virginia redshirt-senior Paige Selenski (Shavertown, Pa.) and head coach Michele Madison earned top honors Tuesday (Dec. 11) from the Virginia Sports Information Directors, headlining the 2012 University Division Field Hockey Team. Selenski was named State Player of the Year for the third time, while Madison earned her fourth Coach of the Year award. The Cavaliers’ Michelle Vittese (R-Sr., Cherry Hill, N.J.), Elly Buckley (Jr., Scarborough Perth, Australia) and Jenny Johnstone (So., Paisley, Scotland) also earned first team honors.

Selenski was the only unanimous first-team selection and one of just three players named on every ballot from sports information and media relations professionals from around the state. She led the Cavaliers to the NCAA Quarterfinals and a 16-6 overall record, scoring 27 goals and 13 assists. In addition to representing the United States at the 2012 Olympics, Selenski was also named ACC Offensive Player of the Year and a first-team All-American this fall.

Virginia led all schools with four players named to the first-team, including Selenski.

Buckley was a second team All-American, first team All-Region, and an All-ACC honoree. The sweeper was the team’s second leading scorer and was fourth in the ACC with 41 points and fourth in goals (17). She also led the conference with five defensive saves.

Johnstone was the lone goalkeeper to earn All-ACC honors this season. Johnstone led the ACC in save percentage for most of the season and was in the top-25 in the nation in both save percentage and goals-against average for most of the year. She was a first team All-Region honoree.

Vittese, a first team All-American, scored a career-high nine goals with seven assists in her senior campaign. As a member of the US National Team, she was named the 2012 USA Field Hockey Player of the Year. She also earned All-ACC and All-Region honors this season as well.

Madison, in her seventh season with the Cavaliers, led the team to the NCAA Tournament for the sixth time. Madison won both the 300th overall game of her career this season and her 100th game as Virginia’s head coach. Madison also went 3-0 against in-state rivals this season including a 5-4 victory over then-ranked No. 3 Old Dominion.

The Virginia Sports Information Directors name 27 all-state teams in 15 sports each year, as well as an academic all-state squad and an all-sports champion in both the university and college divisions. Membership in VaSID is open to all media relations professionals working at a university or conference in the state of Virginia.
