CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – The University of Virginia men’s basketball team returns to action after a 10-day layoff with a nonconference game against Morgan State on Wednesday, Dec. 19. Tipoff at John Paul Jones Arena is set for 7 p.m.

The game will be broadcast on the Virginia Sports Radio Network and webcast on ESPN3.

Virginia (8-2) extended its winning streak to seven games with a convincing 67-39 victory against Mississippi Valley State on Dec. 8. A road victory at Wisconsin (60-54) and home win vs. Tennessee (46-38) have highlighted Virginia’s winning streak.

The Cavaliers are averaging 67 points per game and allowing 48 during the winning streak. Virginia is also limiting its opponents to 30 percent shooting from the field and 24 percent from three-point range during the streak.

Morgan State (3-4) is coming off an 87-68 loss at Illinois State on Sunday, Dec. 16. The Bears have defeated Texas-San Antonio (71-59), Liberty (67-62) and Virginia Military Institute (81-80 ot) this season.

Virginia meets Morgan State for the second time in the series that started in 2006-07 when the Cavaliers defeated the Bears, 85-66, on Nov. 19 in the second men’s basketball game at John Paul Jones Arena.

The Cavaliers continue to shine on the defensive end. Virginia ranks second in the nation in scoring defense (50 ppg) and fourth in opponent field goal accuracy (34.1%). The Cavaliers have held their last two opponents under 40 points, marking the first time Virginia has allowed under 40 in consecutive games since 1948-49 (38 by Langley Field and 39 by Richmond Royals).

Junior guard Joe Harris (Chelan, Wash.) and junior forward Akil Mitchell (Charlotte, N.C.) continue to lead the way for Virginia. Harris and Mitchell are each averaging career highs in scoring.

Harris ranks eighth in the ACC in scoring at 14.8 points per game and has scored in doubles figures in eight of 10 games. Harris is also averaging 4.3 rebounds per game to go along with his career-best 43.5 percent (20-46) three-point shooting accuracy.

Mitchell, who has led Virginia in scoring in each of the last three games, is averaging 13.4 points per game and ranks fifth in the ACC with 9.2 rebounds per game. Mitchell has a pair of career-high 20-point games and is averaging 17.7 points per game during the last three contests.

Sophomore forward Darion Atkins (Clinton, Md.) has added 8.4 points and 5.4 rebounds per game, while guard Justin Anderson (Montross, Va.) leads Virginia freshmen in scoring at 6.4 points per game off the bench. Anderson had a season-high 15 points and nine rebounds against Mississippi Valley State.

Senior guard Jontel Evans (Hampton, Va.) will miss his seventh game of the season after aggravating a foot injury against Tennessee. Redshirt freshman Teven Jones (Kannapolis, N.C.) is expected to start his sixth game at point guard in place of Evans. Virginia is 5-0 with Jones in the starting lineup.

The Cavaliers have held their opponents under 43 percent shooting from the field during the last nine games and are 8-1 when holding opponents under 50 percent shooting.

Virginia head coach Tony Bennett sports a 61-43 record, including a 40-16 nonconference mark, in four seasons at UVa.
