BELGAUM, India – Former Virginia men’s tennis player Michael Shabaz (Class of 2011) captured both the singles and doubles titles at the ITF Belgaum Open, a $10,000 event on the ITF Futures Tour. It was Shabaz’s second singles and second doubles titles of his professional career.

Shabaz, the No. 6 seed in singles, won the title without dropping a set in five matches. In Saturday’s final he topped former Duke standout Torsten Wietoska 6-0, 7-6. En route to the final, he defeated former Cavalier teammate Ted Angelinos (Class of 2008) in the quarterfinals and the top seed, N.Sriram Balaji of India, in the semifinals.

In doubles, Shabaz won his second title of the month with former Memphis standout Amrit Narasimhan. The unseeded pair won four matches to win the championship, including a quarterfinal win over former Virginia stars Angelinos and Sanam Singh (Class of 2011).

It was the final tournament of the year for Cavalier alumni on the professional tours. In 2012, the six Cavalier alumni on tour won one ATP doubles title, two doubles titles on the ATP Challenger Tour and eight singles and 11 doubles titles on the Futures Circuit.
