Recap | Final Stats

Virginia Coach Joanne Boyle:

On the game:
“Excited about the win. It is good coming off the break to try to win a tournament. Just a good game to lay the groundwork for hopefully a great game tomorrow.”
“It was a good forty minutes for us to play some basketball and get some confidence going. They were sitting in a 2-3 zone all night. We need to be able to take care of the ball and we did a much better job of that tonight.”

On their focus:
“Definitely better. I think China did a better job of calming us down and getting us into good stuff. We’ve talked to her and Kelsey both about that because we’ve been playing too erratic. Again, it’s a little misleading when someone sits in a zone, but I think she made good calls to get us into the right things with the right people out there.”

Junior guard Ataira Franklin:

On her health:
“It’s definitely the healthiest I’ve been in a while. I just felt like I was able to move better on defense. We got a lot more tips and steals from our press, and I think a lot of that has to do with me being more active up top. So hopefully we’ll ride this out and I’ll feel like this every game. “

On following their showing vs Coppin State:
“I think they obviously saw the Coppin State game and that probably gave them a lot of confidence coming in to this game, so we really had to just focus on us and doing the things we made our identity on last year-going back to getting steals and easy buckets. But it was really just focusing on us”

Senior center Simone Egwu:

On the game:
“It was definitely a confidence booster and we definitely needed it going into this next game and into the rest of the season.”

On following their showing in the Coppin State game:
“It was good to go out and perform, and like I said it was a confidence boost and we really needed it. We needed to get back to, like Ataira said, some of the stuff we were known for last year. So it was definitely a game we needed and I’m really proud of the way we executed.”
