CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va.–The Virginia men’s and women’s divers will open 2013 by competing at the Tennessee Diving Invitational, which begins Thursday (Jan. 3) at the Jones Aquatic Center in Knoxville, Tenn.

This weekend’s meet will competed under the rules similar to the ACC and NCAA Championships with preliminaries and finals. The top 12 from the prelims will move onto the finals, which will take place immediately after the preliminaries.

The meet starts Thursday at 11:30 a.m. and will feature the men competing on the 1-meter springboards, while the women will be on the 3-meter springboards. Friday’s action also begins at 11:30 a.m. with the men on the 3m and the women on the 1m. Saturday will see both genders compete in platform diving starting at 10:30 a.m.

Virginia will be one of 15 schools competing and will face off against three ACC foes, including Clemson, Duke and North Carolina.

In season-opening meet against Navy two freshmen, Carl Buergler and Becca Corbett broke school records for the men’s 3-meter (377.85) and the women’s 1-meter (301.42), respectively. Sophomore JB Kolod competed at the U.S. Diving National Championships last summer and placed 17th on the 1-meter and 20th on the 3-meter.

The entire Virginia swimming and diving program will be back in action Saturday, Jan. 19 against North Carolina.
