CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va.—Virginia volleyball head coach Dennis Hohenshelt announced Thursday (Jan. 17) that Lexi Riccolo and Karlie Suber will join the Cavaliers in the fall of 2013.
Riccolo, a 5-7 defensive specialist from Wheaton, Ill., was a part of St. Francis’ Illinois 3A State Championship squad in 2012 and aided the team in reaching the state semifinals in 2011.
“Lexi is a kid that has really always wanted to come to Virginia academically,” Hohenshelt. “We like her skill set, she’s a back row player and I think she’s good enough to be able to come in and challenge for positions. She’s a really good defender and I like how she plays. She plays hard. She’s played on a state championship team in Illinois and I think it’s important to have players who have played on winning teams and helped them win. I expect her to come in and be a competitor right away.”
Suber, a 5-10 defensive specialist/setter from Mechanicsville, Va., helped lead Atlee to the Virginia AAA state championship match. She was named all-league, all-region and to the Richmond Times-Dispatch All-Metro First Team.
“Karlie is a interesting story because we had her at camp this year and really liked what she did there,” Hohenshelt said. “She’s really competitive and is probably going to be a back row player for us, but she can set if we need her to, which is what she did at camp. She’s very athletic and those are the type of kids we need to get; we need to be more athletic. She’s going to come in and have success right away. She had a great senior year at a local school, Atlee, and if we can get Virginia kids who we think can help us, I’m all for it. I’m excited about what she’s going to bring to the table.”
Riccolo and Suber bring the Cavalier incoming class to six, joining Jasmine Burton (West Hills, Calif.), Haley Kole (Tallahassee, Fla.), Meghan McDowell (Clarendon, Ill.) and Alex Thorson (The Woodlands, Texas).
