Virginia Hosts North Carolina, Duke This Weekend

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va.—The Virginia men’s and women’s swimming and diving teams host ACC rivals North Carolina and Duke this weekend at the Aquatic and Fitness Center. The Cavalier men will take on the Tar Heels at 11:40 a.m. on Saturday (Jan. 19), with the women facing UNC at 2:40 p.m. Both meets will begin with a board of diving before starting the swimming.

Diving for the Duke meet will take place on Saturday at 7:30 p.m., while the swimming portion will begin Sunday (Jan. 20) at noon. Virginia will honor its 12 seniors before the swimming begins on Sunday.

Live results of the action will be available through VirginiaSports.com. Admission to Virginia swimming and diving meets is free to the public. Surrounding parking lots are open to the public, however fans are advised to adhere to the posted parking signs.

Last time the Cavaliers competed as a full team, the men finished second and the women third at the Georgia Fall Invitational Nov. 30-Dec. 2. Senior Lauren Perdue (Greenville, N.C.) and freshman Courtney Bartholomew (Holland, Mich.) qualified for the NCAA Championships in the 200 free and 200 back, respectively, along with the women’s 800 free relay.

The UVa divers competed at the Tennessee Diving Invitational Jan. 3-5, where sophomore JB Kolod (Pittsburgh, Pa.) broke the men’s school record on the 3-meter boards.

Virginia’s women are ranked 10th in the latest CSCAA national rankings, while the men are tabbed 15th. North Carolina’s women are ranked 16th, while UNC’s men are 22nd.

North Carolina swept Navy in its last outing on Jan. 12. The men (3-1) defeated the Midshipmen, 175.5-124.5, while the women (4-0) were victorious, 213-84.

In 2012, the Tar Heel men defeated UVa, 166-134, while the UVa women won, 170-130. North Carolina’s women have finished second at the ACC Championships each of the last five years, while the men have placed either second or third. UVa has won the conference title on both the men’s and women’s side five consecutive seasons.

Last time out, the Blue Devils were swept by South Carolina, with the men falling, 159-141, while the women dropped a 184-155 decision.

UVa swept Duke in 2012, where the men won, 155-140, while the women were victorious, 154-131.

The Cavaliers return to action next weekend against Wisconsin and Virginia Tech in a tri-meet with three sessions that will mimic the NCAA Championship schedule. The three sessions are scheduled for Friday at 6 p.m. and Saturday at 9 a.m. and 3 p.m.
