Cavaliers Conclude Action at UVa Winter Invite

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – No. 11 Virginia concluded action Monday at the eighth annual UVa Winter Invitational at the Boyd Tinsley Courts at the Boar’s Head Sports Club.
The Cavaliers won five singles matches and two doubles matches in the individual tournament against No. 34 Utah.
Claiming singles wins for Virginia were freshmen Julia Elbaba (Oyster Bay, N.Y.) and Stephanie Nauta (Galveston, Texas), and seniors Erin Vierra (Norwell, Mass.), Hana Tomljanovic (Bota Raton, Fla.) and Maria Fuccillo(Rockville, Md.).
No. 4 Elbaba beat No. 103 Sarah Pham 6-0, 6-1 at No. 1 singles and No. 43 Nauta beat No. 72 Tereza Bekerova 6-4, 7-5 at No. 2.
Vierra topped Lucia Kovarcikova 6-2, 6-3 at No. 4 and Tomljanovic was a 6-2, 7-5 winner over Natasha Smith at No. 5. Fuccillo beat Paige Miles 6-4, 6-1 at No. 6.
Vierra and freshman Maci Epstein (Winter Park, Fla.) beat Smith and Elena Najera-Salas 8-5 at No. 2 doubles and Elbaba and Tomljanovic beat Callie Craig and Pham 8-2 at No. 3.
Elbaba shared the tournament’s singles championship with Tennessee’s Brynn Boren and Northwestern’s Kate Turvy. The trio each tallied 30 points at the No. 1 singles position.
Tennessee’s Boren and Kata Szekely won the doubles title with a 3-0 mark and 36 points.
Virginia opens its dual season at VCU on Friday, Feb. 1. First serve is set for 3 p.m.
