CHARLOTTESVILLE – The Virginia men’s and women’s track and field teams travel to University Park, Pa., this weekend for the Sykes-Sabock Challenge Cup. The event is Saturday at the Ashenfelter III Indoor Track on the campus of Penn State. The meet begins at 9 a.m. with the women’s pentathlon, followed by other events beginning at 12 p.m.
The meet features the men’s and women’s teams from Binghamton, Buffalo, Cornell, Liberty, Lock Haven, Penn, Penn State, Princeton, South Florida, UNC-Wilmington and Virginia, along with the men’s team from Connecticut and the women’s teams from Jacksonville and James Madison.
The Sykes-Sabock Challenge Cup is the first meet of the season for the full Cavalier team. Two weeks ago, Virginia had a group comprised of mostly sprinters and jumpers compete at the Terrapin Invitational, where the Cavaliers won four events. Virginia won both 600m races, with junior Natalia Kuhn (Virginia Beach, Va.) taking the women’s race in a time of 1:35.88, and sophomore Payton Hazzard (Huntington, N.Y.) winning the men’s race in a time of 1:12.07. The Cavaliers also swept the triple jump titles, with sophomore Ryan Satchell (Central Islip, N.Y.) winning the men’s triple jump with an indoor personal best of 15.04m, and senior Dallas Rose(Pearland, Texas) winning the women’s triple jump at 12.47m.
Next weekend the Cavaliers will split up for two meets, the Virginia Tech Elite Meet (Feb. 8-9) in Blacksburg, and Husky Classic (Feb. 8-9) in Seattle, Wash.
