CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – The Virginia women’s basketball team (14-7, 6-4 ACC) hosts ACC-leading No. 5/4 Duke (20-1, 10-0 ACC) on Friday, Feb. 8 at 7 p.m. The game will be streamed live on the internet on ESPN3.
This will be the lone regular-season meeting between the two teams. The Blue Devils have won the last 19 meetings. Virginia’s last victory over Duke was a 61-49 victory in Charlottesville on Jan. 30, 2000. This will be Duke’s fourth time playing at John Paul Jones Arena, where they have never lost.
This will be the second time in her career that Virginia head coach and Duke alumna Joanne Boyle has coached against Duke. The Boyle-led Cavaliers fell 77-66 at Duke last season. Boyle served as an assistant coach at Duke from 1993 to 2002, working under head coach Gail Goestenkors. During that nine-year span the Blue Devils recorded a 225-121 record, advancing to the NCAA Championships the last eight seasons and making Final Four appearances in 1999 and 2002. A four-year letterwinner at Duke, Boyle graduated in 1985 with a degree in economics. Her 75 steals during the 1984-85 campaign remained the highest single-season total until Alana Beard broke the mark in 2000-01.
Virginia is coming off a 65-62 loss against Georgia Tech. It was just the second time this season the Cavaliers lost at John Paul Jones Arena, with their home record falling to 9-2. The Cavaliers are 4-1 this season in games right after a loss. Virginia has only lost two games in a row once this season, following up the loss to No. 25 West Virginia with a road loss at No. 9 Maryland. In the last six seasons, Virginia has only lost back-to-back home games once, when they dropped three straight JPJA games during the 2010-11 season.
Telia McCall (Sr., Marietta, Ga.) scored a career-high 28 points against Georgia Tech. It was also the most points scored by a Cavalier player in a single game this season, topping the 25 points scored by Kelsey Wolfe (Jr., Germantown, Md.) at Minnesota in the ACC/Big Ten Challenge. It was 10 more than her previous career high of 18, scored earlier this season at Georgia Tech.
Sixteen of McCall’s 28 points were scored at the free throw line, the most free throws made in a game this season by an ACC player. It also tied the Virginia program record for most free throws made in a game. McCall was the first player in the last 29 years to make 16 free throws in a game, tying the mark hit by Cathy Grimes in a Jan. 31, 1984 game against Maryland.
McCall, who only missed one free throw in the game, closed out the contest by making 13 straight attempts.
Virginia made 31 of its 35 free throw attempts (88.6 percent) against Georgia Tech, the second time this season the team shot better than 88 percent in a game. The Cavaliers were 23-of-28 (82.1 percent) from the free throw line at Wake Forest, their fifth time this season shooting 80.0 percent or better from the stripe. In the last two games, Virginia has made 87.0 percent of its free throw attempts. Virginia is now second in the ACC in free throw shooting efficiency at 74.3 percent, a mark that ranks 34th among all NCAA Division I teams. Virginia is shooting an ACC-leading 74.9 percent from the free throw line in conference games this season.
Ataira Franklin (Jr., Bowie, Md.) scored nine of the Cavaliers’ first 11 points in the Georgia Tech game, hitting a three-pointer and getting a pair of and-one layups in the first five minutes of the game. She finished with 15 points, six rebounds, two steals and an assist.
Franklin scored a season-high 23 points at Wake Forest, her first 20-point game since the season opener against James Madison. She led the team in scoring three of the last four games and has made 10 three-pointers in that same span, going 10-for-17 (58.8 percent) from long range.
The Cavaliers snapped a streak of six games in which they hit five or more three-pointers in the game when they made just one against Georgia Tech. The streak tied the 2002-03 season for having six-straight games against ACC opponents in which they have made five or more three-pointers. Wolfe was 3-of-3 from three-point range against the Demon Deacons. The Cavaliers are shooting 35.2 percent from three-point range in ACC contests this season, ranking second in the conference, trailing only Duke (39.9 percent).
Virginia will travel to Blacksburg to take on Virginia Tech on Sunday, Feb. 10 at 2 p.m. After a Valentines Day game at Boston College, the Cavaliers will return home to host Maryland on Sunday, Feb. 17 at 5 p.m. in a game that will be broadcast on ESPN2. The Feb. 17 Maryland game will be the Play 4Kay game. All fans in attendance are encouraged to wear pink to the game.
