Women's Basketball Alumna: Chelsea Shine

Chelsea Shine, who graduated from UVa last May with a bachelor’s degree in sociology, has just been hired to be the color commentator on a pair of upcoming ACC games. On Thursday, Feb. 14 she will be working alongside play-by-play man Tom Werme on the Duke/Virginia Tech game that will stream live online through the ACC Digital Network. On Sunday, Feb. 17, Shine and Werme will team together again, working the North Carolina at Florida State game, which will be televised on the ACC Regional Sports Networks.
“The opportunity to do these games is something that I am extremely grateful for,” Shine said. “The sport of women’s basketball has grown tremendously over the years and announcers have such a huge role in this in the way they educate fans.”
Shine spent her senior year working as an intern at WINA 1070-AM, the flagship station of Virginia women’s basketball, and also worked with the video services department, serving as the host for the Cavalier Sports Weekly. She also spent some time working with the Raycom Production team at Virginia’s Feb. 3 game against Georgia Tech, shadowing the TV talent as well as practicing stand-ups and other skills she will need for her debut.
“Broadcasting and communications is a field that I have been interested in for awhile, and getting the chance to be the color analyst for two different upcoming games is very exciting,” Shine said. “Although I watch from the sidelines now, I feel so blessed to still be involved in the game that I love so much.”
Since August, Shine has been working for the Virginia Athletics Foundation in a year-long, full-time paid internship program where she is getting hands-on experience in various areas of development.
“Working with the Virginia Athletics Foundation has been an extremely educational and humbling experience,” Shine said. “I have really enjoyed it so far because I’m getting to see how athletics works `behind the scenes.’ There are so many working parts that go into making it possible to play your sport every day. From scholarship costs to academic affairs, to traveling costs and brand new facilities, the VAF staff works tirelessly to meet these costs.
“Through my development internship with the VAF I have gotten to see how this all comes together and it is through the true loyalty and endless dedication that our donor base has to the student-athletes. Without them, it simply would not be possible. I loved my time as a student-athlete at the University and to be able to continue serving our athletics program is extremely rewarding and something that I take great pride in.”
