CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – The Virginia women’s basketball team (14-8, 6-5 ACC) travels to Blacksburg to take on Virginia Tech (8-14, 2-9 ACC) on Sunday, Feb. 10 at 2 p.m.

The Cavaliers have won the last 13 meetings between the two including a 52-48 victory on Jan. 3, 2013 in Charlottesville. Since Virginia Tech joined the ACC for the 2004-05 season, the Cavaliers are 15-2 against the Hokies. The Cavaliers’ last loss in Blacksburg was a 60-58 game on Jan. 22, 2007.

Virginia Tech is third in the ACC in scoring defense, holding opponents to 55.5 points per game. Virginia is right behind, ranking fourth at 58.0 opponent points per game. On the offensive side, Virginia Tech is last in the ACC, averaging 49.4 points per game while Virginia scores 63.5 points per game.

Virginia Tech comes into the game after defeating Georgia Tech, 63-61, Friday night in Atlanta. The Hokies held a seven-point lead with 3:30 left in the game. Georgia Tech narrowed the gap to two points with 1:24 remaining, but missed three shot attempts down the stretch and couldn’t erase the deficit. Monet Tellier scored 24 points with five rebounds, four assists and a pair of steals. Aerial Wilson added 11 points and Alyssa Fenyn tallied 10 while handing out five assists. Porschia Hadley grabbed six rebounds.

Virginia is coming off a 62-41 loss to No. 5 Duke. The Cavaliers had a nine-point lead, 22-13, with 6:12 left in the first half. The nine-point deficit was the largest deficit of the season that Duke had to overcome for a victory. Previously the largest deficit faced by the Blue Devils in a game they went on to win was an 8-0 hole to start the Miami game. Duke and Miami were tied, 29-29, at the half before the Blue Devils outscored the Hurricanes 53-14 in the second half. In Friday’s game, Duke held a 24-22 lead at the half before outscoring the Cavaliers 38-19 in the second period.

The Cavaliers outrebounded the Blue Devils, 42-32. Virginia had 21 offensive rebounds, with Ataira Franklin (Jr., Bowie, Md.) pulling in a career-high seven O-boards. Telia McCall (Sr., Marietta, Ga.) had five offensive rebounds.

Both players flirted with double-doubles in the Duke game. Franklin led the team with 15 points and tying her season high with nine rebounds, coming up one boards shy of getting what would have been her first double-double of the season. Franklin also had five of the Cavaliers’ eight steals in the game. Franklin has led the team in scoring four of the last five games, including the Duke game, averaging 17.6 points per game in that span.

McCall had 11 rebounds, her seventh double-digit rebounding effort of the season. She also scored eight points. McCall currently ranks seventh in the ACC in rebounding, averaging 8.1 rebounds per game.

Virginia went 6-of-6 from the free throw line against Duke, the first time that UVa was perfect from the stripe since 1987 when they were 14-of-14 in an NCAA tournament victory over Memphis State. In the last three games, the Cavaliers are shooting 86.9 percent (60-of-69) from the free throw line. Virginia is ranked second in the ACC with a 74.6 percent free throw shooting efficiency and is hitting 75.5 percent of its free throws in conference games. Franklin is 17-of-18 from the free throw line in her last four games. McCall has converted 13 consecutive free throw attempts.

With the losses to Georgia Tech and Duke, the Cavaliers have now dropped two games in a row and will try to avoid losing three straight games for just the second time in the last six seasons. Since the beginning of 2007-08, Virginia has only once tallied three straight losses, falling to Miami and at Florida State and Georgia Tech in 2010-11.

The Cavaliers have shot 16.7 percent from three-point range in each of the last two games after having two recent games shooting 50.0 percent or better: making 6-of-12 against Wake Forest and 6-of-10 against Miami.

Next week, the Cavaliers will travel to Boston College to take on the Eagles on Thursday, Feb. 14 at 7 p.m. After the Valentines Day game at Boston College, the Cavaliers will return home to host No. 7 Maryland on Sunday, Feb. 17 at 5 p.m. in a game that will be broadcast on ESPN2. The Maryland game will be the Play 4Kay game. All fans in attendance are encouraged to wear pink to the game.
